Cape football players went on scoring drives the first six times they touched the ball Sept. 8 at Legends Stadium, leading Woodbridge 35-0 at halftime, running the clock, then resting comfortably with a 42-0 lead with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

Cape coach Mike Frederick called off the dogs, while Woodbridge coach Marvin Dooley did not. The Blue Raiders got back to a respectable 42-26 final score.

Joe Coveleski threw touchdown passes to three different receivers, hitting L.T. Messick for 28, Keishawn Mansfield for five and Maurki James for 52.

James also had two rushing touchdowns. Carlton Bruinton also had a rushing touchdown of four yards on a sweep. Wilson Ingerski was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points and made a touchdown-saving tackle on a kickoff return.

James had 15 carries for 173 yards and 249 all purpose yards for the game. Coveleski was 8-for-11 passing for 143 yards and three touchdowns.

Tracey Johnson of Woodbridge had 24 carries for 199 yards and four touchdowns..

Cape’s defense was led in tackles by C.J. Fritchman, Thomas Gibbs, Nate Horn and Ethan Felker.  The starting Cape defense limited Woodbridge for 48 first half yards.

The home-opening win was the first for Cape since a 49-12 victory over Lower Cape May in 2016.

“The Cape kids deserved some success,” said Frederick, who’s in his first year as coach. “The band and cheerleaders, the pregame with Izzy [Fuscellaro] as honorary team captain, and the student section, it was just a great overall night for Cape Henlopen.”

The Vikings next travel to William Penn for a game at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17. William Penn lost 39-14 to Sussex Central in its first game.
