Dover runners slash and gash Cape’s defense in 33-12 victory

Vikings have bye week before going down to Delmar
September 26, 2022

Dover High gashed the Cape defense Sept. 23 at Legends Stadium led by running back Jakwon Kilby, who rushed for 160 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 33-12 victory.

Dover did not punt in the football game, scoring on their first five possessions of the football game.

Coach Mike Frederick said, “Dover executed well. They play extremely well from tackle to tackle and are well coached in the fundamentals of the game. They also won the battle of situational football. We had some opportunities to get stops in the first half on a third and fourth and long, and they were able to convert. We have to win on third and fourth and long, especially against a team with their level of talent. Very impressed with their offensive line, running back and defense. We have more work to do, but we are excited for the opportunity to get back out there and improve.

“A standout for me was C.J. Fritchman. He was all over the field and played the outside linebacker position at a really high level. A terrific tackler. He made some plays that kept the game close heading into halftime.”

The Vikings trailed 14-6  at the half, but opened the third quarter by giving up a kickoff return of 36 yards with a late-hit penalty added on. The Senators had the ball on the Vikings’ 32, then five plays later, they were in the end zone for a 21-6 lead.

Cape never could get back in the ball game. Maurki James had 19 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown. Keishawn Mansfield scored on a 23-yard touchdown run with 3:41 left in the game.

Cape has a bye week and will next play at Delmar at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 10.
