Cape Pop Warner Pee Wees stay undefeated with 24-19 win at Dover
The Cape Vikings Pop Warner Pee Wees defeated Dover/CR Raiders 24-19 Sept. 17 to improve to 3-0 in Henlopen Conference play.
The Vikings went into the weekend with shutouts in their first two games. Dover ended Cape’s shutout play with a rushing touchdown in the first quarter to lead 6-0.
The Raiders later attempted a shotgun snap that went over the head of the quarterback into the end zone, where defensive linemen Cory Barnes recovered the ball for a Vikings touchdown. Zach Gelof's PAT was good to give the Vikings an 8-6 lead.
On the ensuing play from scrimmage, Dover ran 65 yards for a touchdown to regain the lead 13-8.
Dover drove the ball 48 yards on the ground, scoring at the end of the third period to take a 19-8 lead into the fourth quarter. Devin Bennett recovered a fumble on the Vikings' 48-yard line to stop a drive.
Offensive coordinator Alex Hudson called a swing pass out of the backfield that running back Nate Tate took 46 yards to the Vikings' 2-yard line. Quarterback Nolan Brown lined the team up and scored on a quarterback sneak through the left side of the defense. Zach Gelof added the extra points to make the fourth-quarter score Dover 19, Cape 16.
Cape’s defense held the Raiders to one first down on the next drive and the Vikings got the ball back after Dover failed to make a first down on fourth and two.
Tight end Liam Zolper got behind Dover’s defense on Cape's final drive and quarterback Nolan Brown hit him for the go-ahead touchdown. The extra point kick gave the Vikings a 24-19 lead with less than two minutes to play. The Vikings' kicker, Zach Gelof, is 9 for 9 on extra point kicks for the season. Extra point kicks in Pop Warner are worth two points and give the Vikings an advantage during games.
Center Devin Bennett, holder Nolan Brown and kicker Zach Gelof, along with the special teams blocking, added six points and were the winning difference in the game.
The Vikings are in first place in the standings and host a tough Woodbridge team at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24 at Cape Henlopen High School. Admission to Pop Warner games is free.
