Cape students deliver holiday meals to essential workers
Students and staff from the Cape Henlopen High School Kind Voices Club came together Thanksgiving morning to show their gratitude to the community’s first responders and healthcare professionals by preparing and delivering homemade holiday meals. The effort ensured that those working the holiday received a warm, complete Thanksgiving dinner along with fresh-baked pies made by Cape’s Culinary Arts students.
Recipients included members of the Lewes Police Department, Rehoboth Beach Police Department, Lewes Fire Department, Atracare, Delaware State Police Troop 7, Sussex County Paramedics, Sussex County Emergency Call Center and Bayhealth Total Care. Volunteers delivered meals directly to each location, offering appreciation and support to those spending the holiday in service to others.
Cape’s Culinary Arts program students baked a variety of pies in the school kitchen, while additional classmates and family members prepared side dishes to accompany the turkey dinners. In total, 120 meals were assembled and distributed.
The school extends thanks to Cypress Trees, Sysco and the Bencivenga family of Lewes for generously donating the turkeys and containers used for the meals, as well as to all families who contributed food. Students also created Thanksgiving cards for first responders.
“This event truly highlighted the strong spirit of service within the Kind Voices Club as well as the entire Cape Henlopen community,” said Nancy Ashby, teacher and club advisor. “It was a wonderful day that provided a meaningful way for our students to give back during this holiday season. Thank you to everyone who played a part in making it a success.”
Kind Voices is a school-wide club under the Allied Health Pathway, although all students are eligible to join. The club’s purpose is to pay it forward to the community, spreading kindness to nursing homes and any facilities the students can reach. Students also fundraise, volunteer and give back in a variety of ways throughout the school year.
