Cape teams compete at Odyssey of the Mind world event

June 18, 2018

Over the long Memorial Day weekend, students from Shields Elementary, Mariner Middle and Beacon Middle schools traveled to Iowa State University to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind World Competition.

As the largest creative problem-solving competition in the world, the Odyssey of the Mind World Competition hosts teams from numerous countries. Divisions for the competition vary from kindergarten age to college. Students compete in both long-term and short-term problems against other students in their division.

“I’m very happy with the outcome all of our Cape students had this year at Worlds,” said Cheryl Baldwin, teacher and OM advisor. “They were tasked not only with fundraising to get to Iowa, but also with putting in endless hours of practice to prepare for the competition.”

Students were able to generate the majority of the costs for attendance through local fundraising. “We couldn’t have attended without the support of the district, local businesses, individuals, parents and coaches. Each played a very valuable part in helping our students achieve success,” said Baldwin.

During the four-day competition, students participated in opening ceremonies, various competition categories, and networking opportunities with other students from around the world. Shields Odyssey students earned 13th place in the Triathlon Travels Problem 1, 28th place in the Animal House Problem 4, and 30th place in A Stellar Hangout Problem 5. Each problem category had between 35 and 45 teams participating.

Beacon students earned a 20th-place finish out of 41 teams competing in their division of Animal House, and Mariner Middle School placed 39th out of 52 teams competing in Triathlon Travels.

“I’m so proud of our students and their success in the an OM competition,” said Eileen Baker, parent of an OM student. “Odyssey of the Mind has provided so many unique opportunities not only for the students, but for us parents as well.”
