Cape volleyball falls to Smyrna
The Cape girls’ volleyball squad dropped to 1-2 with a three-set 15-25, 14-25, 14-25 loss to a tough Smyrna team. The Eagles are 3-0.
The Eagles have only lost one game to their three opponents.
“Going into the match, we were aware of the offensive presence Smyrna had, and they lived up to it,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “Typically, a team has a standout player who, when they rotate to the back row, you’re able to get your points, but they’re a two-headed dragon that has firepower in all six rotations. Our serve receive gave us some opportunities, but we weren’t able to execute consistently enough to remain a threat. Our rally defense was inconsistent again due to a high-powered offense, and our out-of-system setting and attacking just wasn’t effective. We served well, which is a positive. These are the matches, as a young team, we need to experience to try and prepare ourselves for hopefully an experience in November.”
Emily Cook led the Vikings with 15 digs. Freshman Harper Mamele hit .250 on 12 attempts.
“Emily had a strong defensive effort, and what Harper did is a solid number for a still-new and learning freshman,” Coupe said.
Sophomore Amalia Fruchtman knocked down five kills, while setter Emerson Smith put up 13 assists. Mallory Terhune bumped eight digs.
The Cape JV squad fell from the undefeated ranks with a loss to the JV Eagles.
Cape hosts Polytech Tuesday, Sept. 19.
