The Cape volleyball team moved to 1-1 on the season with a 25-7, 25-13, 25-11 win over Woodbridge on the road in Bridgeville.

The Vikings started out hot, holding the Raiders to seven points in the first set and continued the pressure from the service line to take the three-set victory.

Junior setter Emmy Smith put up 17 assists and powered in five aces in the game. Amalia Fruchtman powered in eight kills while little sis Amara knocked down five. Rylee Ockels slammed seven aces, while Mallory Terhune bumped six digs.

“I’m happy with our overall play from beginning to end,” said Cape coach Tyler Coupe. “We opened with energy and good intentions, and we maintained that throughout all three sets, no matter what combo of players we ran. Our serving really led us, with 23 aces to only eight errors. That’s a number that is really going to help any team win matches. I thought Emily Cook continued to stand out as she gets comfortable in a new role as one of our libero options. Amalia [Fruchtman] really made a conscious effort to impart some of the things we worked on in Monday’s practice, and that’s just a great sign that she’s listening and staying engaged.”

Alanis Beniquez-Feliciano led the Raiders with 25 digs, while Bre'azia Upshur garnered four kills.

“I’m proud of our girls stepping up to the challenge,” said Raiders coach and Cape grad Brad Walker. “Going into the match knowing Cape has been a playoff team for many years, our girls played fearless. We worked on handling serve receive in preparation for today’s match, and their hard work really showed. We are a young team with a good amount of first-year varsity players, so I’m excited to build off of this start and continue to find success.”

The Cape junior varsity team moved to 2-0 with a 25-11, 25-2 victory.
