Cape wrestling closes regular season with 61-8 win over DMA

State championships set for Feb. 27-28 at Cape

The Cape Henlopen wrestling team closed out the dual-meet season Feb. 12, beating Delaware Military Academy 61-8 behind six pins and two forfeits. The Vikings finish 8-3 on the season, with losses to Caravel, Caesar Rodney and Smyrna.

Luke Bender and Drew Simpson, the state’s top two wrestlers at 145 pounds, went head-to-head in the featured bout of the match. Bender grinded his way to a pin 3:39 into the match. Bender will enter the state tournament Saturday, Feb. 27, with a perfect 11-0 record. 

C.J. Fritchman (152) pinned Giovanni Sama at 4:46 to also finish the dual-meet season at 11-0.

Cape also received pins from Brian Garcia (132) over Ethan MacDonnell in 33 seconds, Mike Elphick (170) over Hayden Moaney in 4:53, Jackson Handlin (195) over Dominic Sama in 3:47 and Arthur Bennett (106) over Matt Avery in 3:29.

Mikey Frederick (138) and Lucas Ruppert (285) received forfeit wins. 

Cape got wins by decision from Josh Wright (120) over Alyssa Mahan 11-2, Carson Kammerer (160) over Steven Novack 4-0, Dalton Deevey (182) over Tyler August 7-2, and Alex Taylor (195) over Caleb Buckholdt 3-1.

Earning wins for DMA  were Dylan Delcollo (113) over Rony Perez 11-2 and Daniel Williams (126) over Grant Barczak 10-1.

The individual state tournament will be held at Cape on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 27 and 28. The 14 brackets are open but will be seeded. The championship rounds of wrestling will be at Cape Wednesday, March 3. Cape has no students in the building on Wednesdays.
