Celtic Spirituality - A Practice for Every Day is topic July 9 in Lewes
The Rev. Mary L. Allen will present Celtic Spirituality - A Practice for Every Day at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 9, in the parish hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church at 211 Mulberry St. in Lewes.
Celtic spirituality, which traces back to Celtic peoples of the British Isles, embraces the wholeness of God’s creation. It is a spiritual practice which can wrap the day in prayers, from the most mundane of actions to the ones considered important.
This tradition has been handed down from the early days of Christianity in the Celtic lands. In her presentation, Allen will introduce attendees to the history of the Celtic Christian tradition and introduce prayers of the Celts.
Allen requests that attendees bring colored pencils or pens to the presentation as she will bring coloring pages of Celtic art for participants to choose and use. This, she believes, is another way of understanding the nature of this spiritual practice.
Allen has been interested in things Celtic since she bought her first book on Celtic art. Drawn in by the never-ending knot work, she began her investigation into the culture, theology and spirituality of the Celts. Her studies led her to a dual undergraduate degree in history and English. She received her master of divinity degree at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, Calif. She studied with Esther De Waal and attended an international program in Celtic Spirituality at Durham University. She also worked on a doctorate in Celtic Theology at the University of Wales, Lampeter.
Allen is the rector of St. Martha’s Episcopal Church in Bethany Beach.
The Summer Spirituality Series will be at 7 p.m., every Thursday evening through Sept. 8. All presentations are free and open to the public, although donations are gratefully accepted.Fellowship and ice cream cones will follow the presentations.
