Charity helps homebound locals lead dignified lives
I am honored to be a part of the board of directors for Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth. Founded in 1970, this exclusively Sussex charity holds the distinction of being the first home-delivered meal program in the state of Delaware. And it's still going strong today.
The execution of the daily meal delivery is an intricate ballet performed by office staff, cooks, packers and drivers – almost all of them volunteers! Most of the 100 drivers work 2 hours a week making a daily round trip of 25 to 40 miles to deliver 10 to 20 meals.
Since 1995, Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth has delivered well over 665,000 hot meals to deserving seniors! Several years ago, when Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth found itself without a food preparation facility, Matt Haley's SoDel Concepts stepped in to provide the creation, cooking and packaging of the daily meals in the huge commercial kitchen at Fish On in the Villages of Five Points. The popular restaurant bustles early every morning with drivers, chefs and organizers.
So what does all this have to do with the Steppin' Up To The Plate? Well, one of the longest-running charity events in Sussex County is the annual Harry Derrickson Memorial Golf Tournament. And this Sunday, September 24th, on the eve of that golfing extravaganza there will be a fun event at the Rehoboth Beach Country Club called the Fall FantaSea Fete. The festivities begin at 5 p.m. with an open bar, a spirited auction and heavy hors d'oeuvres. The kicker? Every penny earned stays right here in Sussex County with Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth.
As a source of daily contact for homebound elderly, Meals on Wheels Lewes-Rehoboth contains healthcare costs by helping local clients avoid institutionalized living. Be a part of this great service and join us at 5 p.m. this Sunday at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Tickets may be purchased by calling 302-645-7449 or online at mealsonwheels-lr.org.
