Coastal hazards specialist to address preservation group Jan. 14
The Sussex Preservation Coalition will meet at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 14, at Lewes Public Library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.
Danielle Swallow, a coastal hazards specialist with Delaware Sea Grant, will present “The Future of Delaware’s Climate: Key Takeaways.”
She will summarize findings from the state’s new climate projections report and discuss potential adaptation strategies through a land-use lens. This discussion is of particular interest because Delaware is the lowest-lying state in the nation and is experiencing sea level rise at a rate that is twice the global average and accelerating.
Meeting attendees can learn what these findings mean in terms of what Sussex County should anticipate and what is the best way to prevent and/or adapt to these conditions.
Swallow provides technical assistance and outreach to Delaware communities on building resilience to weather and climate hazards. She is co-founder of the Resilient and Sustainable Communities League, a professional network of organizations dedicated to helping communities thrive in the face of a changing climate. She is also active in advising communities about land-use practices, and disaster preparedness, response and recovery.
Swallow is the 2022 recipient of both the Mid-Atlantic Sea Grant Award for Outstanding Outreach and the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean and Environment’s Community Engagement Award. She has 25 years of climate and coastal policy and planning experience.
There will be time for questions after the presentation. Those who can’t attend may view a livestream at SussexPreservationCoalition.org.
