Longtime upholstery business Collier’s Trim Shop in Dewey Beach was purchased in July by Rusty Catts of Catts Family Holdings for $1.9 million.

Catts, who also operates Catts Beach Service, said by phone Aug. 30 that he plans to get through the summer season before deciding what to do with the property. The downstairs shop area has been cleaned out, he said, and there is a second-floor apartment.

Some cosmetic work, drywalling and other repairs need to be done, Catts said, and after that, he may lease it to a business, but he has no firm plans right now.

Located at 2206 Coastal Highway on the corner of Clayton Street, the property is adjacent to Nick’s Dewey Golf, which is also owned by Catts.

In a 2015 Cape Gazette interview, then-owner Mark Joseph said Al Collier opened the upholstery shop in the 1960s. Joseph and his stepbrother Mike Sockriter worked in the shop for decades before taking over the business in 1982.

County records show M & M Partnership, comprising Joseph and Sockriter, sold the property to Catts July 15. The Town of Dewey Beach received $28,500 in transfer tax, while the state received $47,500.

The deed for Collier’s purchase of the property from Joseph and Anna Doto was recorded in 1952; the Dotos purchased the property in 1929. Collier passed away in 1982.
