Correction Commissioner Phelps selects new SCI warden

Correction Commissioner Perry Phelps announced he has selected a new warden to serve at Sussex Correctional Institution in Georgetown.

Robert May, a 25-year veteran of the department, was chosen to lead SCI, an all-male facility that also houses the Youthful Criminal Offenders Program. May began his career as a correctional officer at Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in 1993 following his graduation from the academy.

May has held positions in Level IV and Level V facilities in Delaware's three counties including correctional captain at Kent County Community Corrections, deputy warden at Delores J. Baylor Women's Correctional Institution, and most recently, deputy bureau chief of prisons. May was a member of the DOC Central Intelligence Group for four years and has completed extensive training, including the Risk Needs Responsivity Tool, PREA Auditor Training, Homeland Security Threats, Emergency Preparedness, and Management Development for the Future.

He possesses an associate degree in business, a bachelor of science degree in business management and a master of business administration. May is also a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

The promotion became effective March 4.
