CrossFit Lewes sponsors Share the Pain event to benefit local causes Aug. 12

August 10, 2012

Nearly 50 two-person teams of current CrossFit Lewes athletes and their nonmember guests will compete Sunday, Aug. 12, in two challenging workouts to help raise funds for two local causes.

The event benefits Existence, a local educational foundation that addresses bullying, drug abuse and suicide, as well as the Kay Children Trust Fund, which was established earlier this year when a longtime CrossFit member unexpectedly lost her husband to kidney disease.

“One of the things that makes CrossFit unique is the very strong sense of community among our members,” said Kris Carper, owner of CrossFit Lewes. “CrossFit Lewes has members as young as 13 and as old as 66, all whom which support each other to reach their health and fitness potential every day during the workouts, and also often extend that support into our local community, too. Creating the Share the Pain fundraising event was a natural extension of our CrossFit family, and we are thrilled to help out both of these worthy causes.”

Share the Pain, named for the teams of two who work together to compete against other teams of two, is planned to be an annual event that focuses on different charities or causes each year. In the event, the teams will complete preplanned workouts consisting of typical body-weight exercises, such as sit-ups, push-ups and lunges, as well as some of the more complex weightlifting exercises found in a typical CrossFit workout.

“Our competing guests will focus on the body-weight movements, while the CrossFit members will do some of the more challenging movements such as wall climbs, box jumps, pull-ups and some lifts, too,” said Carper.

Each team will be scored based on the number of repetitions members complete within a defined period of time. The teams’ scores from two different workouts will be totaled at the end, and prizes will be awarded based on their scores. Also, teams could earn extra bonus repetitions if they raised at least $250 in the weeks leading up to the competition.

“We are very proud our members and their guests have been able to raise more than $6,000 to date,” said Carper.

There are additional local sponsors for the event giving prizes for the top three teams, as well as helping provide breakfast and an after-competition celebration for the teams. Participating sponsors include Blue Moon, Delmarva Hand Specialists, Lewes Fishhouse, Logo Motive Custom Apparel, Meineke Car Care Center in Lewes, Old Towne Physical Therapy, Reebok, Root Gourmet, and Therapeutic Massage and Body Work.

Spectators are welcome at the event with donations at the door accepted. Event activities begin at 9 a.m. and continue until noon.
