The Gen. Levin Winder Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution annually sponsors American history and Christopher Columbus essay contests in area schools. Winners were invited to the chapter’s meeting April 15 to receive their awards from American History Chair Joan Chambers.

The DAR American History Essay Contest is open to all fifth-grade through eighth-grade students in public, private or parochial schools, or those who are home schooled. This year’s topic was A Child’s Journey through Ellis Island. A panel of judges composed of DAR members and nonmembers selected the following chapter winners: fifth grade, Puja Jani; sixth grade, William Mears; seventh grade,  Maximillian Taylor, and eighth grade, Karli Sunnergren. All students attend Worcester Preparatory School. Each student received a framed certificate and medal.

The DAR Christopher Columbus Essay Contest was open to students in ninth through 12th grades in public, private or parochial schools, or those who are home schooled. The topic was Joining Christopher Columbus on His Voyage to the New World. Sarah Koon, an 11th-grade student at Worcester Preparatory School, was selected as the Gen. Levin Winder Chapter winner.
