Darryl Gene Witman, veteran, enjoyed coastal living
Darryl Gene Witman, 75, of Lewes, passed away at Bayhealth Hospital Monday, May 8, 2023. Darryl was born Sept. 7, 1947, in Reading, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry A. and Arabella J. (Hamilton) Witman.
After high school, Darryl answered the call to defend his country as a radio operator in the U.S. Army, serving during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, Darryl‘s path would lead him back to his hometown of Reading, Pa., to Boscov’s Department Stores as a tractor-trailer driver, where during his career Darryl not only logged hundreds of thousands of miles but dedicated 39 years of service. Christmas Day in 1985, Darryl wed Jody Waszkiewicz and the two would spend the next 37 years creating a beautiful life and raising their son. After Darryl retired, he and Jody were drawn to the beauty of Southern Delaware and they settled in Lewes, closer to the bays and the ocean, where Darryl could enjoy the peacefulness of the water with a fishing pole in his hand, or just relax on the beach. Darryl took pleasure in the simple things of life. Genealogy was a passion of his, and he enjoyed discovering his family’s ancestry and sharing his findings with the ones he loved.
In addition to his parents, Darryl was preceded in death by his nephew, Daniel Drexler. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jody Witman; his son, Kyle Witman (Genna Borowski); his sister, Peggy Drexler (Thomas); his sister-in-law, Cindy Whitehead; his brother-in-law, Barry Waszkiewicz (Jerry); three nieces, one nephew, and seven great-nieces and -nephews.
Services will be private.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
