Dartmouth Drive-Route 1 crash causes traffic nightmare

July 8, 2021

A Millsboro man was ticketed following a multiple-car collision July 8 in the intersection of Route 1 and Dartmouth Drive.

The crash happened at 11:08 a.m. when a 2019 Toyota Sienna traveling northbound in the right turn/bus lane at Dartmouth Drive failed to stop at the red light and continued into the intersection, said Master Cpl. Heather Pepper of the Delaware State Police.

The Sienna struck the right front bumper of a 2019 Ford Cutaway RV going eastbound on Dartmouth Drive approaching the intersection, she said. The impact caused the Sienna to travel northeast crossing over the concrete median where it struck a 2013 Buick Enclave traveling westbound on Dartmouth Drive, Pepper said.

Following the impact, Pepper said, the RV proceeded northeast across the concrete median where it struck a 2020 Subaru Outback.

The driver of the Sienna, a 62-year-old man from Millsboro, was cited for failure to stop at a red light, failure to have insurance ID in possession, and operating an unregistered motor vehicle. He sustained minor injuries from the crash. A 68-year-old woman driving the Subaru also had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital where she was treated and released.

Northbound Route 1 was closed temporarily. The closure caused some motorists to take alternate routes during the time when traffic was heavy.
