Del Tech offers new fiber optics training courses

June 22, 2012

Delaware Tech Owens Campus is offering three courses in fiber optics training for anyone who currently works in the field of fiber optics, telephone or cable companies, or for anyone who is interested in switching careers. Tuition costs for each program include books and study materials.

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course – This course combines theory and 75 percent hands-on activity to prepare students to take the CFOT test that is sanctioned by the Fiber Optics Association and is given and graded on the last day of class. The course introduces students to industry standards, LAN/WAN fiber networks, basic fusion, mechanical splicing, identifying fiber types, recognizing connectors and installing, terminating, splicing and testing installed fiber cable to existing standards.

Students will also explore the history and future of fiber optics and its capabilities and cost of installation.

The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., July 16 to 18. A Fiber Optics Association certification is awarded to those who successfully complete the program. Cost is $700.

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance – This course provides advanced training in the testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks. It also offers a general, easy to understand approach to fiber optics testing standards with little theory and considerable hands-on activities. It also explains the variety of testing standards, equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and splicing, and how to go about choosing among them. Three-fourths of the course explores the overall spectrum of testing and maintenance of single and multi-mode fiber optics networks and provides a detailed overview and demonstration of various pieces of equipment. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 19 and 20. Interested students must have taken a CFOT course or another formal fiber optics training course within six months, or have one year of fiber optics related experience, and passed the Basic CFOT Exam prior to registration. Cost is $675.

Certified Fiber Optics Splicing Specialist Course – This course includes a comprehensive PowerPoint presentation explaining the important of high performance splicing and details the points necessary to achieve these splices. Also provides background information about splicing and an overview of OTDR functions and trace understanding. Hands-on classroom activities will provide training in both fusion and mechanical splicing of both single and multi-mode fiber optic cables. Inside and outside plant fiber optic cable types will be utilized during these hands-on sessions, as well as inside and outside plant enclosures and splice trays. Students will be responsible for successfully making and testing both single and multi-mode mechanical and fusion splices. In addition, students will be required to correctly and efficiently install mounted splice enclosures, as well as outside plant enclosures. The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, July 21 and 22. Interested students must have taken a CFOT course or another formal fiber optics training course within six months, or have one year of fiber optics related experience, and passed the Basic CFOT Exam prior to registration. Cost is $675.

Training for all three courses is provided by BDI DataLynk, LLC.
