Delaware Shakespeare to perform ‘King Lear’-inspired reading April 9

April 3, 2026

The Lewes Public Library’s Spoken Word Society will welcome Delaware Shakespeare for a reading and discussion of a new, original work, “Caribbean King,” at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 9, at the library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes.

Written by AZ Espinoza, “Caribbean King” takes inspiration from Shakespeare's “King Lear” to create a modern and captivating tale about building found family and queer community in the eye of a storm. In this modern twist, Cord is Lear’s transgender son, returning to the Caribbean island of his birth as it transitions out of the Commonwealth and into political independence. Standing in his way are his father, the island's last colonially appointed governor general, and a catastrophic hurricane barreling toward the island.

Following the performance, participants are encouraged to stay for a question-and-answer session and discussion with the playwright, director and performers.
