Delaware South falls in Carpenter Cup semifinals

Tri-Cape advances to finals at Citizens Bank Park
June 27, 2023

The 2023 Delaware South Carpenter Cup team came within one run of forcing extra innings and two runs away from clinching a spot in the legendary tournament’s championship game.

After defeating opponents by a combined score of 27-8 in the first two rounds, Delaware South jumped out to an early lead at Citizens Banks Park on a cloudy, muggy day in Philadelphia. Seeking its first title since 2000, the team was up against 2021 and 2022 Carpenter Cup champions Tri-Cape from New Jersey.

Indian River rising junior Jace Jarmon led the game off with a walk before being driven in by Middletown’s Chase Timmons, who also scored thanks to Sussex Tech’s Kade Hall. The 2-0 lead was short-lived, as Tri-Cape responded with two runs in the bottom of the first.

Jarmon came up to the plate again in the top of the second inning, doubling in Sussex Tech’s Austin Griffith and Kameron Tindley to give Delaware South a 4-2 lead. Roman Keith of Indian River's ball into the outfield allowed Sussex Tech’s Kobe Tindley to score before the inning ended. Tri-Cape responded, but failed to tie the game, heading into the third inning trailing Delaware South 5-4.

Sussex Central’s Noah Burroughs took over on the mound for Appoquinimink's Chase Fleming and fired a scoreless third. After failing to add to the lead in the fourth, Delaware South trailed for the first time in the contest following a two-run blast to left field by Tri-Cape’s Robert Carfango in the bottom of the fourth. St. George’s Jimmy Breen took over for Burroughs and kept Tri-Cape off the board for the remainder of the contest, picking up four strikeouts along the way.

Following the crooked numbers posted by Delaware South in the first two innings, Tri-Cape’s pitching staff produced 10 strikeouts over the final five frames, surrendering only one hit, and didn’t allow a single run. The 6-5 total sent Tri-Cape back to the championship game for an attempt at a third consecutive title.

Other local players in the game include Timothy Hitchcock, Lex Wescott and Issac Terhune of Cape Henlopen; Ben Cordrey of Indian River; and Jeremy Vest, Jaryn Sample, Rosnell Lewis and Sean Ely of Sussex Tech.
