Delmarva Christian senior trio celebrated before Dover game

Royals’ Bohinski, Efford and Rogers honored alongside family

With the season winding down, Delmarva Christian baseball took time before its May 11 game against Dover to honor seniors Mason Bohinski, Xavier Efford and Garrett Rodgers.

Although the Royals didn’t get the results they wanted in the 10-0 loss, they were still able to make some memories with their family during the ceremony and reflect on their playing careers afterward. Transferring from Cape, Efford believes he made the right choice.

“The coaches here helped me improve a lot with pretty much everything – my pitching, my fielding and my hitting,” Efford said. “It was fun, especially to play with these boys that are like my family now, so it was a really good experience to come here and play baseball.”

Set to play baseball at Delaware Tech next year, not only does Efford share a favorite memory with Rodgers, but also he hopes to continue helping the Royals’ program after graduation. The two said Efford’s walk-off against Polytech, where he threw three shutout innings in relief, was their favorite memory. Efford hopes to help out whenever he gets a break from Delaware Tech duties, and Rodgers, who specializes in weight training, would like to help the boys when they begin training in the fall.

“I'd say another memory would be just coming out here every day after school, just having fun with the guys and giving them 110% every day,” Rodgers said.

Both Rodgers and Bohinski were four-year varsity members of the team, and coach Jeff Bell believes they have done an excellent job of leading the younger guys and showing them the right way to do things.

“I can't even think of a specific moment in a game, but just a family that's been built over the four years, the teammates that I've had, and how close we are as a team,” Bohinski said.

One of the few bright spots on the partly cloudy day for the Royals was Bohinski’s diving catch that was followed by another highlight play from freshman Silas Jones, whose leaping catch robbed Dover of a home run. It provided a literal example of how the three seniors have shown the younger players how to play the game with maximum effort.

“Just their presence and what they do and how they do it is something you hope the underclassmen catch on to,” Bell said. “I’ll miss them, but hopefully we have kids behind them that will learn from them and perform like them when they get older.”
