The 6-1 Delmarva Christian volleyball team took a 3 1/2-mile ride to face Sussex Academy (3-4) in a non-conference match Sept. 29. They left with a 25-9, 25-17 and 25-13 victory.

Royals sophomore Elaina Millaway led the team with 14 kills and nine digs, while big sister Ellie slammed 10 kills and picked up 12 digs. Senior setter Tessa Kwiatkowski put up 20 assists and served three aces. Little sister Maggie assisted on 12 points and served three aces. Libero Lily Fetterman bumped 15 digs. Senior Evelyn Jensen slammed nine kills and made four blocks. Kaylan Yoder was credited with six kills.

Senior Terri Kirschner led the Seahawks with 11 assists. Junior Carmen Merrick tallied five kills, four digs and four blocks. Senior Gabrielle Heintz bumped nine digs. Sophomore libero Savannah Montgomery bumped six digs, while junior Danica Duncan knocked down five kills.

“We really kept the energy up today,” said Tessa Kwiatkowski. “We’ve had trouble with that in the past few matches. We really worked well and together tonight. Our chemistry was great.”

“Our chemistry has grown throughout the season,” said Jensen. “We didn’t start off the season the way we wanted, losing to Cape, but we’re getting stronger every match.”

“We are playing together and strong,“ said Royals head coach Mike Zampini. “Every match gets us ready for moving down the road to the state tournament. That’s the girls’ goal.”

“Delmarva Christian was the quickest and strongest team we’ve played so far this season,” said Seahawks head coach Hailee Gooch. “It was great exposure into more areas we need to continue to focus on. The girls kept their heads high and are ready to continue to work hard and move forward with a successful season.”

The Royals junior varsity team moved to 4-3 on the season with a 2-0 victory over the Sussex Academy JV. The Seahawks junior varsity squad is now 3-4.

The Royals travel to Archbishop Spalding Tuesday, Oct. 4, while the Seahawks travel to Sussex Tech.
