Dewey Beach breaks ground on new town hall

April 29, 2025

The Town of Dewey Beach held an official groundbreaking for a new town hall and public safety building April 25.

This transition from planning and preparation to the physical construction of the project has been eagerly anticipated by not only the town’s administration, but also residents.

The new town hall, located at 1505 Coastal Hwy., will feature upgraded office spaces, a modern police department and a dedicated location to house the Sussex County Emergency Medical Services.

According to Dewey Beach Mayor Bill Stevens, the project is expected to take a little over a year-and-a-half to complete and cost $11 million. Funds are coming from partnerships from the state and county levels, and the remainder coming from town’s own internal savings, said Stevens.

Nick Costello, project superintendent for Costello Construction, said he expects Phase 1 of the project to take 430 days and involve building the new town hall and police department. Phase 2 is expected to take 170 days and involves transferring operations to the new building, demolishing the old structure, and building the EMS quarters.
