The Dewey Post serves up sweet and savory treats
A new eatery in the south end of Dewey offers a variety of hot and cold breakfast items, coffees and cocktails, and evening ice cream and milkshakes – with or without the booze.
“It is Dewey,” smiled Lo Skarda, who with wife Ashley opened The Dewey Post in mid-August in the spot most recently occupied by MezCali. “We’re maintaining the bar, but our focus is to be a breakfast place.”
The eatery’s moniker is a play on an archetypal newspaper name and a morning gathering spot, which was missing in south Dewey, Lo said.
“It’s great to be on this side of town again and reunite with friends,” said Lo, who tended bar at the original Lighthouse for many years and now slings drinks at Woody’s Dewey Beach. “Since the Dewey Beach Club closed years ago, it needed an identity change.”
The transformed space now reflects a blue-and-white color scheme of a Parisian café or ice cream parlor. The center bar was fashioned from a white oak tree that was cut down in West Rehoboth, and display cases were sourced from a peanut roaster who operated on the Wildwood, N.J., boardwalk in the 1860s.
Fresh oversized bagels, breads and pastries are delivered daily from Rockland Bakery outside New York City, Liscio’s in South Jersey, and Crack of Dawn Bakery in Berlin, Md.
Breakfast and brunch items include convenient grab-and-go meals, pastries, sticky buns, create-your-own savory hot sandwiches, sweet Belgian waffles and flatbreads.
Customers can choose from a variety of hot and iced Brazilian coffee, lattes, cold brews, cappuccinos and espressos, and smoothies.
After brunch, the restaurant closes for a few hours and reopens to serve dessert, including local favorite Mom Mom’s Cheesecakes, a selection of ice cream, traditional milkshakes, boozy milkshakes and funnel fries.
“Our ice cream is from Bassett’s in Philadelphia,” Ashley said. “It has 16% milk fat, so it’s super-creamy. To compare, Breyer’s has about 10% milk fat, so it’s very rich and different.”
The Skardas say the support they’ve received from friends and longtime local restaurateurs in helping them get started has been phenomenal.
“Everyone has been so welcoming,” Lo said. “And the best sunset in the world is right there at the Lighthouse.”
The Dewey Post, 1205 Coastal Highway, just south of Hyatt Place Dewey Beach, is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m., Thursday through Sunday, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday. The Dewey Post is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Call 302-260-9566 or follow them on Facebook.
