Dog Tag 5K at Post 28 features racing cats and walking dogs

Morris and Saracco overall winners
October 20, 2020

Fifty-six runners and 56 degrees in a 5K race won by 18-year-old Colten Morris running shirtless with goosebumps in a fast time of 17:29. The inaugural Dog Tag 5K event held Oct. 17 at American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro benefitted service dogs.

Mike Sewell, 51, was second overall and first male masters runner in a time of 18:37. Rounding out the top five on the leaderboard were Matt Sparacino, 42, 18:44; Mike Marciano, 31, 19:14; and Brian Daugherty, 60, 21:41.

The top five for women were Ca Saracco, 52, 24:12; masters winner Meryl Ludwig, 54, 24:19; Joanne Senft, 50, 25:53; Kelly Sheptock, 25, 26:05; and Sharon Fanning, 52, 26:17.

An oddity during the era of multiple-waves starts coupled with computerized chip timing is final places are determined by time, not place. In a track race, it’s always place over time. The road race sometimes becomes quirky at the finish as runners race to the chute for place later to discover it was all based on time.

A case in point: Katherine Holt, 60, of Millsboro couldn’t hold off smiling Olivia Baker, 29, of Berlin who crossed the line first. Holt ran 28:15 to Baker’s 28:56, but somehow it always feels better winning the throwdown to the finish chute.

“The faster runners should go off with the first wave, but some enjoy picking people off during the race,” said Race Director Wayne Kursh.

The event had a pack of individualized mutts, a few up for adoption, walking the dog for one mile.
