Dorothy Stoltzfus Bard, many interests, hobbies
Dorothy "Mimi" Stoltzfus Bard, 100, of Lewes, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, July 2, 2022, at Cadia Healthcare Renaissance in Millsboro. Previously, she resided at Brandywine Senior Living in Rehoboth Beach for nine years, where she had many friends, both residents and staff. She was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Atglen, Pa., daughter of the late J. Elmer and Dora (Smoker) Stoltzfus.
Mimi had many varied interests and hobbies. She loved ballroom dancing and made all of her own dresses for competitions, playing bingo and winning a car in 1972, solving word search puzzles, crocheting, and viewing pictures of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her devotion to her family, however, took precedence above all. The time spent with those she held most dear was what she most cherished. Mimi always enjoyed her daily conversations with her sister, Effie, where they talked for hours about everything and nothing, including the Philadelphia Phillies.
She once said she had only two regrets in life: that she did not finish high school and that she spanked her kids too often, although her children never thought it was much of a spanking. However, Mimi was assured by her peers that her kids needed more discipline, not less. She also overcame her lack of formal education by reading voraciously and traveling the world from Anchorage, Alaska to Munich, Germany, as a military wife for more than 20 years. Mimi was the stabilizing force of the family. Loved by many, she will be deeply missed by all who had the good fortune to know her.
In addition to her parents, Mimi was preceded in death by her husband, LTC Harry E. Bard; and her three younger sisters, Evanna, Effie and Lena. She is survived and dearly missed by her children, Michael D. Bard of Hyde Park, Vt., Harry E. Bard of Millinocket, Maine, and Gwen B. Moriarty (Dennis) of Lewes; her eight grandchildren; and her 14 great-grandchildren.
Final care for Mimi has been entrusted to Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
Services will be held in the near future privately for family at Arlington National Cemetery.
