Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration sets events Jan. 19, 21

January 11, 2019

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Organization, Sussex County Inc. invites everyone to participate in its 27th Annual Commemorative Weekend Celebration in honor of the late civil rights leader.

Celebration festivities will begin with a parade at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 19, in Lewes. Individuals and organizations are invited to participate.

At 4:30 p.m. that day, the annual banquet will be held at the CHEER Center, 20520 Sand Hill Road, Georgetown. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Wilma Mishoe, newly appointed president of Delaware State University.

The celebration will conclude with a community worship service at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 21, at St. John 2nd Baptist Church, 22602 Mount Joy Road, Millsboro. The Rev. George H. Edwards Sr. of Friendship Baptist Church in Lewes will bring the message, accompanied by the C.N. Sample Gospel Choir of St. John.

The 2019 theme is Keeping the Dream Alive: Never Lose Hope. In these times of uncertainty and turmoil, people must never lose faith in a brighter future for all. As Dr. King once said, "If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps moving; you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today, I still have a dream!"

Banquet tickets are available through advance sales only. No tickets will be sold at the door. For more information, go to www.nextstop.us.com/MLKJrSussexCounty. For parade information, call Alphonso Miller at 302-227-3531.
