East of Maui announces fall closure for Lewes location
A little more than a decade after its opening, East of Maui Surf Shop will be closing its Lewes location. The business announced the closure Aug. 21 on its Facebook page.
“We are sad to announce that EOM’s Lewes location will be closing its doors for good this fall,” reads the post.
In an interview Aug. 22, East of Maui co-owner Bob Singer said the decision to close the store was made for a few reasons, but mainly due to his age and finances. The store will be open daily through Labor Day and then weekends until the inventory is gone, he said.
“It’s bittersweet,” said Singer.
The original East of Maui, 104 Saint Louis St., Dewey Beach, opened in the 1980s and ever since has been supplying the Cape Region with products for surfing, kiteboarding, winging, foiling, skimboarding, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking. The surf shop’s second location, 34 Cape Henlopen Drive near the Freeman Highway intersection, opened in early 2012.
Singer said the original location in Dewey Beach is remaining open.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” he said.
