Elizabeth Barnes Carey, friend to many

Elizabeth Barnes Carey (Bess) died peacefully Saturday, Feb. 11, 2024, at Salem Hospital, Salem, Mass.  A few days before her death, Bess enjoyed many visits from her family and close friends.

Bess attended Wheaton College in Massachusetts and graduated magna cum laude from Tufts University.

Bess had many friends of all ages, a wonderful sense of humor and an incredible way with words. She loved books of all genres and enjoyed the reruns of “Perry Mason,” “The Rifleman” and “Bonanza.”

Bess was preceded in death by her parents, Charles D. Carey Jr. and Margaret Barnes Carey. She is survived by her brother, Charles D. Carey III (Dave), his wife Rebecca L. Geiger (Becky), and their daughter Rachel G. Carey; and her sister, Ellison M. Carey, all of Lewes.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The American Heritage Center, University of Wyoming, Dept. 3924, 1000 E. University Ave., Laramie, WY 82071, for the digitization of Joseph M. Carey’s papers (her great-grandfather, senator and governor of Wyoming); or Merrimack Valley Food Bank, 1703 Middlesex St., Lowell, MA 01851.

A reception in memory of Bess will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, May 18, at Lewes Yacht Club, 2701 Cedar St., Lewes, with a sharing of memories at 3 p.m.
