Elks host bowling fun for Stockley Center residents

March 20, 2024

Cape Henlopen Elks members hosted seven residents and nine staff members from the Stockley Center Feb. 27 for a fun afternoon of bowling and fellowship in the Elks Lodge 2540 hall near Lewes.

Led by Barb Gilsenan, Elks community outreach committee members have established a great relationship with the Stockley Center team. Located in Georgetown, the center is a residential facility for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The bowling event allowed residents to participate in an easy activity outside their usual surroundings at the center. With the help of an electronic-controlled ramp device called Poss-i-Bowl, wheelchair-using players are able to bowl with a simple touch of a button.

Participants met new people, and shared smiles and excitement. Volunteers from the Elks assisted as bowling attendants. Elks Past Exalted Ruler Gary Eckenrode, garbed in his official black-and-white striped shirt and using a sports whistle, acted as referee.
