Equine-assisted therapy for military to be showcased June 10

May 23, 2022

The equine-assisted psychotherapy and learning facility Courageous Hearts LLC will host an open house and demonstration of its alternative mental health services for military personnel and veterans from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, June 10, at its farm at 8848 September Way, Lincoln.

The military demonstration includes therapeutic sessions that incorporate horses to help participants process thoughts, behaviors and patterns with licensed mental health practitioners and equine specialists. This event will showcase the advantage of utilizing horses in grounded activities during psychotherapy for a client’s healing and well-being.

Courageous Hearts LLC has been affiliated with the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association Military Designation since 2012. This program was one of the first organizations to create and develop standards for the inclusion of horses in mental health treatment. EAGALA has expanded to become a worldwide movement with a network of supportive and collaborative professionals.

The Courageous Hearts LLC team of professionals serves the community with specialized training to benefit military members. The upcoming event for this organization will demonstrate the understanding and support provided from Courageous Hearts LLC for active-duty military, veterans and their families.

Courageous Hearts LLC Executive Director Rosemary Baughman said the military demonstration will showcase the inclusion of horses in psychotherapy sessions.

“The purpose of the event is to share an alternative form of mental health treatment that includes grounded work with horses that are helping military members,” Baughman said. “The event has provided insight and awareness to the community on mental health issues in the military. The uniqueness of adding grounded activities with horses provides opportunities to decrease depression and trauma response while increasing healthy daily living.”

The military demonstration event invites any persons or organizations involved with military personnel or veterans to attend.

Services at Courageous Hearts LLC for military members and veterans are provided at no cost due to a variety of generous funds, including the federal Adaptive Sports Grant. Courageous Hearts LLC has been the recipient of these federal funds for the last three years; as a result, it has been able to provide mental health services that include interactions with horses.

Courageous Hearts LLC has assisted more than 50 military members and veterans by helping them to achieve their goals of reducing anxiety and depression, increasing effective coping techniques, feel better about themselves and process challenging emotions.
