The second annual Fort Miles 5K started at the big guns at Cape Henlopen State Park April 5 and saw 109 people finish with wet feet. The skies were clear but extraordinary high-flood tides washed over sections of the course.
“I walked through the wet stuff, which was slippery,” said race winner Matt Sparacino. “Those sections of trail were slippery.”
Mike Sewell, 58, was second overall, winning the male masters title in 19:59. Angela Barber, 27, placed third overall and won the overall female title in 20:23.
“I ran for St. Francis University [in Loretto, Pa.]," said the physician’s assistant. “Back in college, I ran over serious hills in the 18-minute range, but with the training I’m able to do now, I’m happy with my 20:32.”
Jacqueline Southern, 42, of Grasonville, Md., won the female masters race in 26:49.
The top 36 runners broke the 36-minute barrier, which is 9:19 mile pace.
Notables: Don Zalenski, 78, of Magnolia won the male 70-99 age group in 39:50. Carolbeth Lambert, 70, of Seafiord won the same age group in 49:35.
