Fort Miles chapel still stands today

June 20, 2023

In its hey day, Fort Miles in today’s Cape Henlopen State Park had just about everything a solider could need without leaving the base. For those seeking spiritual fulfillment, the base had its own chapel.

Built in the 1940s, this image shows what it looked like in the 1970s. It still stands today, serving as a day camp building across from the basketball courts and playground. It still has the crosses on either side of the door too.

The fire control tower behind is no longer visible, as the trees and brush have grown up around the building.

With war looming in Europe, military officials established Fort Miles in 1941 to defend the mouth of the Delaware Bay. The fort remained in operation in some form until 1991, when it fully decommissioned.
