Frank M. McKelvey, lifelong Philly sports fan

January 2, 2022
After a very brief illness, Frank M. McKelvey, 77, of Millsboro passed away Monday, Dec. 27, 2021, at Suburban General Hospital in Norristown, Pa.

Born Feb. 24, 1944, the second of three sons to James and Edith (DiGirlamo) McKelvey,  Frank – aka Pop Pop and Uncle Frank – grew up alongside his two brothers Jim (Jr.) and Charles (Chuck) in King of Prussia, Pa. A 1962 graduate of Upper Merion High School, Frank was a member of the Upper Merion 1961 Suburban League Section II Championship Golf team.  As an adult, he won the Club Championship at Westover Golf Club twice. Frank was an avid golfer his entire life and continued to play right up to the time he took ill.

Frank served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969 and was stationed in Vietnam. Honorably discharged with the rank of sergeant, Frank received a Bronze Star in December 1968 for meritorious service in a military operation against hostile forces, and was awarded the 1st Oak Leaf Cluster in November 1969.

After serving in Vietnam, Frank graduated from Parsons College and worked for the City of Philadelphia Welfare Department for several years before meeting the love of his life Laverne (Sautner) McKelvey. Together they built and ran their own business as insurance brokers for 20 years in King of Prussia. Frank was a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, and continued to root for his beloved Phillies and Eagles even after retiring and moving to Millsboro.

In addition to his parents and his brother Jim, in 2016 Frank was preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Laverne. He is survived by his stepson Wayne (Amy) Peschel, his beloved granddaughters Brittany and Jessica Peschel, his stepgrandson Johnathan, his brother Chuck, and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are private and at the convenience of the family.
