Gas odor prompts short evacuation at Cape High

Officials determined there was no leak; students returned to class
May 16, 2023

At about 7:42 a.m., Cape High officials sent an email and robocall to students’ parents informing them that they have been made aware of a potential gas leak at the school.

Those in the building were evacuated to Legends Stadium and students who arrived at the school were asked to report directly to the stadium and not enter the building.

The Lewes Fire Department live run log shows that a gas leak was reported at 7:21 a.m. Students reported at least one fire truck at the scene at about 7:37 a.m.

At 7:59 a.m., subsequent correspondence sent to parents stated that officials determined there was not a gas leak. The source of the gas odor was identified and resolved, the statement said, and the school is safe for students to return to the building and resume classes as normal.

When reached for comment, Cape Public Relations Coordinator Steph DeMalto said that the source of the gas odor was an oven in a culinary room that was left on.
