Gather and Give for Gavin fundraiser set May 16

Community rallies behind injured Cape student

Gavin Birl, a Cape Henlopen High School student, was injured in a snowboarding accident earlier this year.

Gavin is the son of Cape grads Damian and Katherine Birl, owners of Smokin D’z Real Pit BBQ in Milton.

Gavin is still going through extensive therapy after the emergency surgery to fuse his spine back together and is currently paralyzed from his chest down.

The Gather and Give for Gavin fundraiser will be held from noon to 6 p.m., Sunday, May 16, at Hudson Fields. The rain date is May 23.

Entertainment and attractions include live music, food trucks, kid-friendly activities and a silent auction.

Six great bands will play on the big stage at the following times: Noon, Electric Velvet; 1 p.m., Love Seed Mama Jump; 2 p.m., Lower Case Blues; 3 p.m., Hope For Success; 4 p.m., Trent & the Trainwreck; 5 p.m., The Funsters.

Food and drink will include Smokin D'z BBQ Pulled Pork, food trucks, Revelation Craft Brewing Company beer truck and Beach Time Distilling Company.

Activities include pony rides, petting zoo, yoga, cornhole, spear throwing, tug of war and more.

“My family and I would like to thank our wonderful community near and far for pulling together to support us during this unexpected situation,” said Katherine Birl. “We are beyond grateful for each and every one of you, and for all the love, support, donations, and prayers the family has received. We always want to thank all of the extremely generous and amazing people who have volunteered their time and efforts to organize this fundraiser. All of you have truly made a huge difference in both our lives and in Gavin’s recovery, and for that we are forever grateful.”

“The team at Revelation is so proud to be a part of this benefit for Gavin,” said Patrick Staggs, Revelation Craft Brewing Company co-founder and brewmaster. “There is so much community support for this young man and his fight. It’s going to be a big event for a great cause.”

Tickets cost $10 per person; there is no charge for children under 12. All monies will be donated to the Birl family.

Tickets are available from noon to 8 p.m., Monday to Thursday at Revelation Craft Brewing Company, 199841 Central St., West Rehoboth. Tickets will also be available at Community Bank of Delaware branches at 16982 Kings Highway, Lewes, and 30088 Veterans Way, Rehoboth Beach; and at Rise Fitness and Adventure Gym, 35770 Airport Road, Rehoboth Beach. Tickets will also be available on the day of the event.

Revelation and Hudson Fields are joining forces for a new community event called Thankful Thursdays which will support a different nonprofit every Thursday from June 3 to Oct. 14. The Revelation Beer Garden at Hudson Fields will reopen Friday, April 30.
