Generous benefactor supports AAUW scholarship program

AAUW Coastal Georgetown recently announced it has received a $20,000 donation in support of its scholarship program from the family of Marty Johnson. This most recent contribution brings the family's support for the education of promising young Sussex County women to more than $60,000.

Johnson, a longtime AAUW member, started working with young people when she was 15. She tutored youth in a migrant ministry with her local church and continued helping children who needed help for the next 60 years, almost without interruption. Johnson got her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Western Michigan University, followed by another advanced degree from Johns Hopkins University.

She and her husband, Toby Johnson, retired to the beach in 2004, where Marty volunteered with Read Aloud Delaware. When she passed in 2023, Toby said, “It seemed natural to me to continue on her behalf, indirectly, using the good work that AAUW is capable of doing and does every year.”
