Georgetown businesses band together for October scarecrows

Merchants invited to join in
October 4, 2014

The scarecrows are back!

Scarecrows which last year lined the Georgetown business district are back for the month of October. Only this year there is a difference: the scarecrows have been created and built by the merchants and businesses on Market Street, bringing a variety of styles to the annual display.

Visitors to the business district can enjoy ”Johnny,” the moribund entry from the Delaware Department of Justice, and “Eunice,” the sassy gal in purple contributed by The Upper Crust. A slightly tattered lawyer, designed by Sergovic, Carmean and Weidmann LLC, stands at one end of East Market Street and a cheerful farmer from Shone Lumber is at the other end. In between are the donations of 11 other Georgetown businesses. Also lining East Market Street for the season are festive autumn flags contributed by Town Councilperson Chris LeCates.

The sponsor of the display is Georgetown Arts & Flowers, a local community organization dedicated to the beautification of the historic town and the promotion of cultural events in the community. Members of Arts & Flowers installed the scarecrows, along with cornstalks and colorful fall flowers.

Market Street businesses and offices which created the scarecrows are: Axe Bail Bonds, Delaware Department of Justice, Georgetown Antique Mart, Georgetown Barbershop, Georgetown Family Restaurant, Givens Flowers & Gifts, Hudson Billiards and Arcade, Manlove Auto Parts, Panasystem Inc., Sergovic, Carmean and Weidman PA, Staffmark, Sussex Republicans, Town of Georgetown, and The Upper Crust. Shone Lumber which furnished lumber for the scarecrows’ frames also donated a scarecrow. The cornstalks were from Don’s Tree Farm in Greenwood.

Individuals and businesses interested in becoming a part of Georgetown Arts & Flowers may do so by contacting Georgetown.Arts.Flowers@gmail.com or writing to the organization at PO Box 63, Georgetown DE 19947-0063.
