Georgetown man faces charges in connection with bombs, guns, drugs
A Georgetown man faces charges after police say they found pipe bombs, guns and drugs at his residence.
Police responded about 1 p.m., Nov. 10, to a home in the 17000 block of McColley’s Chapel Road in connection with a domestic-related assault. They learned David Godwin, 61, had a handgun while fighting with a family member, police said, and tried to assault the victim with a club. After the fight, police said, Godwin fled the residence. Troopers tried to locate Godwin and obtained a warrant for his arrest. The victim was treated by EMS and refused transport to the hospital, police said.
Troopers returned to the home Nov. 11, and arrested Godwin without incident. While conducting a check of the residence as part of the domestic violence investigation, police said they found drugs, guns and what appeared to be homemade pipe bombs. The Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team responded to the scene, removed the devices and rendered them safe. Detectives secured the scene and obtained a search warrant for the property, police said.
During a Nov. 12 search of the property, police said they found four pipe bombs, five pipe bombs (hoax devices), an altered claymore mine (hoax device), an altered novelty/plastic grenade (hoax device), about 9.1 grams of methamphetamines, 27 marijuana plants, a .22-caliber rifle, three .223-caliber rifles, two .22-caliber handguns, a .380-caliber handgun, a .45-caliber handgun, a .357-caliber handgun, and assorted ammunition.
Godwin was charged with four counts possession of destructive weapon – bomb; seven counts of possess, transport, use or cause another to transport, use or place any hoax device; nine counts of possession of a deadly weapon, semi auto or auto by a person prohibited who also possesses a controlled substance; possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony; two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance; aggravated menacing; terroristic threatening; and third-degree assault. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 2, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on combined $280,000 cash and secured bond.
