Georgia House abruptly closes two locations

Milford and Selbyville restaurants shuttered
June 20, 2019

Georgia House restaurant abruptly closed its remaining locations in Milford and Selbyville.

In Milford, a sign was posted on the door thanking customers for 13 years of business, but no further details of the closing were available. The restaurant had previously closed its Millsboro location in March.

Owner Larry McQuay did not respond to a request for comment.

Jo Schmeiser, executive director of the Greater Milford Chamber of Commerce, said Georgia House joined the chamber in 2008 but had not been a member since 2013.

“As the largest organization that supports businesses and organizations in the community, the chamber is not always surprised; however, we are always disappointed when a business closes. It affects the local economy in many ways, including leaving people jobless,” she said.

Schmeiser said the Georgia House building, 18 South Walnut St. in the heart of downtown Milford, is a great building in a great location and should draw a lot of attention. She anticipated another business going into that space in the near future. The Georgia House building had two floors, with a downstairs dining room, upstairs banquet room and an outdoor patio.

Georgia House was the second large Milford restaurant to close this year, after Abbott’s Grill closed in January.

Schmeiser said a new restaurant, Benvenuto, will open in the Abbott’s Grill space later this year.
