Get to The Point for sweet baked goods in Rehoboth Beach

Early birds coming to Rehoboth Beach would be wise to start their day at The Point, which, fittingly, represents the point where visitors begin their journey into town.

Taking over the space formerly occupied by Oby Lee’s Coffee Roastery at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 1A, The Point, which opened July 9, looks to continue Oby Lee’s tradition of sweet baked goods.

The space was purchased at auction in May by the Zerby family, which also owns the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel. Six weeks later, The Point was open for business.

The menu offers delicious sticky buns, cinnamon buns, danishes, made-to-order-Belgian waffles, éclairs, bagels and artisan breads.

To wash all those down, The Point also offers all kinds of hot and iced coffees, with some roasted in-house. There are espressos, cappuccinos, frappés and smoothies as well.
Manager Steve Cobb said, “Each week we’ll be adding more and more items as we go.”

These items also include pastries cooked up by pastry chef Sean Hixon. Baker John Delvecchio makes baked goods fresh daily. Cobb said the chefs make desserts for both The Point and the Boardwalk Plaza.

Among the pastries, Cobb said, are the chocolate torte, key lime cheesecake and, the signature dessert, the Victorian Bomb – a cake and ice cream concoction with a dash of chocolate.

One of the more popular items is the Belgian waffle, which Cobb said could be made to order in less than three minutes. Toppings include strawberries, apple cinnamon, powdered sugar and, a favorite with kids, chocolate chip.

Cobb said The Point is expanding its lunch menu to include several fresh salads, soups, sandwiches and a quiche of the day.

Of the name, Cobb said, “As you get into Rehoboth, it’s the point. It’s short. You can remember it. So far, people do love it.”

Cobb said The Point has managed to hold onto customers who frequented Oby Lee’s. Jennifer Zerby, who handles marketing for The Point, said, “People are happy that it’s another locally owned business and not a big chain taking it over.”

Like any good coffee house, The Point also has free wireless internet.

Cobb said in the future, The Point would like to make more extensive use of the upstairs patio room, which seats 20 to 30 people, and possibly expand its hours further into the evening. He said The Point would look to expand its coffee roasting and its baked goods menu.

“Always be friendly. Always be a great place to make people comfortable. That’s what the hotel is here for, that’s what we’re here for,” Cobb said.

The Point is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
