At times, students are faced with an illness, injury or disease that may require extensive traveling for treatment. Now, thanks to the Get Well Map Foundation, those students and their families will receive a Get Well Map as well as a gift card to Wawa to help with traveling expenses.

“Inevitably, there will be a time when one of our students has an experience that will require them to travel long distances to seek specialized pediatric care,” said Bobbie Redefer, a nurse at Cape Henlopen School District. “It’s comforting to know that an organization like the Get Well Map Foundation is in existence, and has graciously provided the district with donations that the students and families may someday need.”

Get Well Maps provide a fun and engaging way for kids to keep track of their medical progress. When paired with a resource like a Wawa gift card to help with gas, it becomes a practical and helpful resource for families who are navigating a challenging experience.

The Get Well Map Foundation is a nonprofit organization founded and operated locally in Sussex County. Earlier this fall, the Cape High field hockey team hosted a fundraiser night to benefit the foundation.

“Our organization works to enhance therapeutic, family-centered healthcare initiatives for children and families across Delaware and beyond,” said Christina Connors, president of the Get Well Map Foundation. “The fundraiser with the Cape Henlopen field hockey team helped raise awareness and funding for child- and family-centered Get Well Map resources. These are resources that will help ease anxiety and enhance communication between children, families and their medical teams.”

The fundraiser held by the team helped provided 10 Wawa gift cards and 10 maps to be donated and used throughout the Cape District. The cards and maps will be distributed to each of the school nurses and the school social workers, who will provide them to families as they are needed.

“We are so grateful for all that the Get Well Map Foundation has provided to the district,” said Redefer. “It’s my hope that these maps and the gas cards will help ease the minds of both the students and the parents or guardians working through what is otherwise a challenging medical situation.”
