Greene Turtle 5K Lewes features eggs and ham following run
The 4th annual Greene Turtle Lewes 5K Run/Walk took place Aug. 19. Proceeds from the 5K benefited the Cancer Support Community, whose mission is to help cancer survivors with knowledge and supportive services. Red balloons were purchased in memory of loved ones who died from cancer, and raffle tickets were sold for a basket of cheer. Gold sponsors were Premier Orthopaedic and Wheeler, Wofenden and Dwares, CPA. Silver sponsors were Curtis J. Leciejewski, DDS, and Michael D. Keller, DMD.
The overall winner was Danny Lorah, age 16, from Reading, Pa., in a time of 17:39. He also won the Highway One 5K in Dewey earlier in August. The masters winner was physics teacher Greg Cauller from York, Pa., in a time of 18:33. Lynn Knothe from Wilmington was the female winner in a time of 20:43, and Mardiny Ung from Elizabethtown, Pa., was the female masters winner in 22:52. Mardiny has run all the Seven Sisters series and is getting ready for the Bottle & Cork 10-Miler Saturday, Sept. 8. The Greene Turtle treated the runners and walkers to a huge breakfast buffet which featured scrambled eggs, fruit, pastries, bacon and meatballs and Michelob Ultra Beer for those over 21.
D.J. Farren, age 10, from Wilmington, beat his father, Dave Farren. D.J.'s time was 21:51 and his dad finished in 21:56. Mike Piorkowski from Glen Mills, Pa., finished the 5K in 22:24, winning first in his 50-54 age group after riding his bike from Glen Mills to Wildwood, N.J., and competing in a triathlon Aug. 18, then taking the Cape May-Lewes Ferry to Lewes for the Greene Turtle race. Rich, 77, and Marge Warshauer, 73, from Rehoboth both ran in the 5K; Rich finished in second place in the 70-79 men's age group in a time of 38:14 and Marge finished first in the 70 -79 women's in a time of 40:23. Paul Kiefer from Lancaster, Pa., celebrated his 72nd birthday this week and finished first in the 70-79 in a time of 30:01.
Fred Tower from Annapolis, Md., won the 80 and over age group in a time of 39:38. His daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Robert Powell, won the race-walking category, and his grandson, Will Powell, finished first in age 10-13 in a time of 20:06. The crowd of runners and walkers appreciated the Greene Turtle's breakfast buffet, and the Cancer Support Community expressed thanks for the money raised to help support its programs in Sussex County.
