Harrington casino fundraiser nets $12K for food bank
Harrington Raceway and Casino recently hosted its 7th annual donation drive Feb. 28, raising nearly $12,000 to benefit the Food Bank of Delaware.
Casino patrons poured in hundreds of donations, helping to make this year’s drive a rousing success despite the current challenging health environment. On March 8, representatives from the casino presented Food Bank of Delaware Community Relations Director Chad Robinson with a check representing fundraiser proceeds.
“The Food Bank of Delaware appreciates the ongoing support of Harrington Raceway and Casino,” said Robinson. “Over the past year, our organization has seen an unprecedented rise in demand for food assistance across our state. Since the pandemic began almost a year ago, the Food Bank of Delaware has distributed over 17 million pounds of food across our state. Without the support of concerned individuals and businesses like Harrington Raceway and Casino, this would not be possible.”
While this year’s donation drive featured monetary donations instead of the previous canned goods drive in order to better accommodate COVID-19 protocols, the outcome was as impressive as years past.
"Harrington Raceway and Casino is committed to strengthening and improving our community, and the food bank is one of the organizations with whom we have a strong collaboration,” said Hank Rosenberg, Harrington Raceway and Casino COO of Hospitality. “This has been such a trying year for the whole country and unfortunately the pain and hardships that many Americans are facing come to the forefront in times like these. I don't believe the average person realizes the amount of hunger that exists right here in our community, and how many people don't know where their next meal is coming from. In lower Delaware, one out of every five children will go hungry. People are having to make choices of paying their rent and heat and electric bills or put food on their tables. No child or adult should go hungry, and so many would if it weren't for the food bank."
The Food Bank of Delaware relies heavily on volunteers and its hundreds of hunger-relief partners in its food distribution efforts, which amassed 14 million pounds last year. Data compiled by the Food Bank of Delaware states that there were more than 121,000 food-insecure Delawareans in 2020.
