Historic baseball photos to be auctioned March 27

March 25, 2010

A one-of-a-kind set of photographs of the legendary Sultan of Swat, Babe Ruth, is one of the featured items at the 2010 DFRC Sussex Auction to be held starting at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, March 27, in the clubhouse at Baywood Greens, Long Neck.

The images were captured when George Herman “Babe” Ruth was playing in the Bethlehem Steel Baseball League in Lebanon, Pa., during World War I. The images were taken by Harpel Studios of Lebanon, and this is the first time that prints have been made from those negatives.

The two prints have been professionally conservation mounted and framed. The frame is backed with an article from the Lebanon (Pa.) Daily News Weekender describing the “major league” baseball teams that once played in the region.

The DFRC Sussex Auction is a live and silent auction event featuring dozens of unique items, many with the flavor of southern Delaware. Tickets are $45 each, and each ticket will admit the bearer and a guest.

Tickets for the auction are available by contacting Mary Ann DiBonaventura at 302-947-9662 or Dan Tidwell and Ed Duffy at 644-6600.
