Historic Lewes Farmers Market awards producer scholarships
For 19 years, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market has awarded scholarships to small-scale Delmarva farmers to attend sustainable farming conventions including the Future Harvest Annual Conference, Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention, and Pasa Sustainable Agriculture Conference.
This year, the HLFM awarded a total of nine farmer scholarships.
Awards from the regular scholarship fund went toTravis Reid of Reid Angus to attend the National Angus Convention, Craig Brady and Brandon Brady of Stag Run Farm to attend the Crop Expo, and Ricardo Hyacinth of Caribe Locavore Farm to attend the Pasa Sustainable Agriculture Conference.
In 2016, the market established an emerging women farmers’ scholarship fund in memory of Delaware farmer Debra L. Schaefer. This year, five farmers received a Debra L. Schaefer Scholarship for Emerging Women Farmers.
Stephanie Reid of Reid Angus will attend the National Angus Convention; Becca Buckler of Williwaw Farm and Susan Maddox of Earth Harmony Produce will attend the Future Harvest Conference; Jeanette Hammon, a Dittmar Family Farms employee, will attend the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention; and Taieshia Hyacinth of Caribe Locavore Farm will attend the Pasa Sustainable Agriculture Conference.
Consistent with its mission, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market is committed to supporting established and emerging farmers who grow fruits and vegetables and raise animals to feed the community. These scholarships help Delmarva’s small farmers become better educated about sustainable and regenerative farming practices.
