Historic Lewes will kick off its spring season Wednesday, April 1, with the return of walking tours and a lineup of events highlighting the town’s history and the approaching Delaware 250 celebration of 250 years of American independence.
Beginning April 1, visitors can explore Lewes’ past on the Lewes History Highlights Walking Tour, offered at 11 a.m., Wednesday through Saturday. This popular overview tour highlights key moments that have shaped Lewes across three centuries.
A range of specialty tours also begins in April. The Lewes Legends Evening Walking Tour explores the town’s haunted history on Wednesday and Sunday evenings, while Finding Their Voices: The History & Legacy of the African American Community in Lewes highlights the important contributions of Lewes’ African American residents on Tuesday afternoons.
Especially fitting this year is the Revolutionary Lewes Walking Tour, offered twice monthly, and highlighting the people and places that shaped the town’s role in the American Revolution.
The History in Bloom Tour, set for Saturday and Sunday, April 11 and 12, pairs Lewes’ vibrant tulip displays with stories of the town’s historic streets and landscapes, guided in partnership with Lewes in Bloom.
A key highlight of the month, Hearty in the Cause: 1776 – Lewes Town Living History, will take place Saturday and Sunday, April 18 and 19. As part of the broader Delaware 250 commemoration of America’s founding, interpreters will re-create daily life in Lewestown during the turbulent spring of 1776 through demonstrations, trades, music and lively conversation across the Historic Lewes campus.
Other April highlights include Historic First Friday Community Night April 3, Haunted Histories Paranormal Investigations April 11, and the popular Shanty Night at the Sussex Tavern Friday, April 24.
Most events begin at the Historic Lewes campus, 110 Shipcarpenter St.
