HOB students raise pennies for paws

May 13, 2009
H.O. Brittingham Elementary School students in grades K-5 participated in the “Pennies for Paws” fundraiser during the month of April. They raised a total of $314 and Khara Conlon’s kindergarten class raised $42. As a prize for raising the most money, Conlon’s kindergarten class had a pizza party Friday, May 8.

All the money will go toward the comfort and care of the animals at the Georgetown SPCA. Fourth-grade students from Annette Couch’s and Tracey VanRees’s class also completed an art project. They drew sketches of numerous animals at the shelter and their pictures are displayed in the front lobby at the shelter. Next year the SPCA hopes to possibly have the students create greeting cards that could be sold to raise money for the shelter.

The Georgetown SPCA is now a low-kill shelter as animals are only euthanized if they are seriously ill or too aggressive. Animals may remain at the shelter for up to six months before finding a forever home. Adoption fairs are held two Saturdays each month at the Rehoboth Concord Pets on Route 1 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. to help find the animals homes. The SPCA has also organized “Run for the Paws,” a 5K race that will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Starboard Restaurant in Dewey Beach. One hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the animals at the shelter. The race is part of the Seashore Striders events. Volunteers are always needed at the shelter for cat cuddling, dog walking, fundraising and more.
