With a focus on portraits, photographer Jacqueline Wilson has opened Jacqueline MC Photography in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

“I’ve been doing photography at an amateur level for a while now, and I decided I wanted to make a career of it,” said Wilson, during a recent interview in her new Lake Avenue studio. “I really do love it.”

Wilson said she has always been interested in the arts. She entered college as an art major, but ultimately graduated with a degree in biology. She got her start as an amateur photographer well over a decade ago taking pictures of the subjects she knows best – her six dogs. After that, she said she started doing senior portraits and family portraits for free.

Wilson said she had been looking to rent a space so she could open a studio, and she jumped at the chance when she saw the new rental space. She said she leased the space in August, but it wasn’t ready so she didn’t hold her first in-studio session until October.

“I had been thinking about doing it for a while,” said Wilson on making the plunge and renting a space. “When I saw this place up for rent, I was like, ‘Alright, let's do this.’”

To enhance customer experience, Wilson has clients fill out a questionnaire before the session so she can get an idea of what they’re expecting. It allows her to be totally prepared, she said.

Wilson said family portraits can be trying for everyone involved – mom wants something special, dad is generally being cooperative and the kids probably don’t want to be there. She said she pulls out all the stops to get everyone on the same page.

“I only schedule one family a day, so if there needs to be a break, it can be taken without feeling pressured on time,” Wilson said.

Wilson said studio space gives her more options for her clients. She said a lot of her clients ask for outside scenes, but if the weather isn’t cooperating, the studio gives people a place to get a few photos in a controlled environment.

Beyond control, Wilson said having a downtown Rehoboth location allows her and her clients to walk to different types of outdoor environments with relative ease – her studio is across the street from Cranberry Park and three blocks from the Boardwalk.

“Oftentimes I’ll be walking with a client or family, see a nook, cranny or wall somewhere that’s interesting and we’ll take some photos with that as the background,” said Wilson. “I love the versatility having a studio downtown offers.”
