Janet Pulliam Malone, loved people, animals

April 30, 2025

Janet Pulliam Malone, 79, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully at her home Sunday, April 27, 2025. Born July 23, 1945, in Baltimore, Md., Janet was the beloved daughter of the late William Eldridge Pulliam of Alton, Va., and Elaine Frances Henderson of Anne Arundel County, Md.

Jan was a woman of great warmth, deep compassion, and an abiding love for both people and animals. Throughout her life, she was blessed by the companionship of 12 cherished dogs, who brought her great joy and comfort. Jan grew up in Middle River and graduated from Kenwood High School in 1963, and later graduated from Morgan State University in 1973. She worked for Pratt Library in Baltimore, Md., driving a bookmobile, and then took a job in downtown Baltimore at the library in the telephone reference center. Jan was an avid reader and would read at least one book a week, especially if it was by her favorite author, Jane Austen. She also enjoyed going for walks when she moved to Delaware and would often walk 1-3 miles a day on various trails.

Jan found her true partner in life in Marvin James Malone, whom she married on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 1992. Their love was one of mutual respect, devotion, and enduring friendship. Together, they started a college student scholarship fund for Susquehanna University, where each year a needy student would receive the Malone Scholarship to assist with any expenses.

Janet is survived by her loving husband, Marvin; her dear aunt, Marie Denner; her brother, Gerry Lynch and his wife Carmela; her niece, Christina Lynch Young; and her nephew, Michael Lynch. She was preceded in death by her devoted parents, whose influence shaped her gentle and giving spirit.

A funeral service in celebration of Janet’s life will be held at noon, Saturday, May 10, at Watson Funeral Home and Crematorium, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, with a viewing from 11 a.m. to noon. Interment will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 12, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.

Family and friends may choose to send flowers or make a memorial contribution in Janet’s name to the CHEER Community Center, cheerde.com/long-neck-center.

Janet’s kindness and quiet strength touched all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
